Eight powers of ten: similarities in black hole accretion on all mass scales

چکیده
In this paper we discuss the recent advances in the quantitative comparison of accretion, and the accretion:jet coupling, in accreting black holes in both X-ray binaries (where MBH ∼ 10M⊙) and Active Galactic Nuclei (105 ≤ MBH ≤ 109). These similarities include the radiative efficiency and jet power as a function of accretion rate, which are themselves probably the origin of the ‘fundamental plane of black hole activity’. A second ‘fundamental plane’ which connects mass, accretion rate and timing properties provides us with a further physical diagnostic. Patterns of radio loudness (i.e. jet production) as a function of luminosity and accretion state are shown to be similar for X-ray binaries and AGN. Finally we discuss how neutron stars are a useful control sample, and what the future may hold for this field.

The Connection between Jets, Accretion Disks, and Black Hole Mass in Blazars
The properties of relativistic radio jets are thought to be closely connected with the properties of accretion disks in active galactic nuclei. We explore this issue using a sample of 35 blazars with very-long baseline observations, for which we can estimate the kinetic powers of their relativistic jets, the bolometric luminosity of their accretion disks, and the masses of their black holes. Co...
متن کاملThe Event Horizon of M87
The M 6 109 × ⊙ supermassive black hole at the center of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 powers a relativistic jet. Observations at millimeter wavelengths with the Event Horizon Telescope have localized the emission from the base of this jet to angular scales comparable to the putative black hole horizon. The jet might be powered directly by an accretion disk or by electromagnetic extraction of...
متن کاملAccretion onto the First Stellar Mass Black Holes
The first stars in the universe, forming at redshifts z > 15 in minihalos with masses of order 10M⊙, may leave behind black holes as their remnants. These objects could conceivably serve as "seeds" for much larger black holes observed at redshifts z . 7. We study the growth of the remnant black holes through accretion including for the first time the emitted accretion radiation with adaptive me...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Black Hole Mass and Spin in Active Galactic Nuclei
Observations show that the central black hole in galaxies has a mass M only ∼ 10 of the stellar bulge mass. Thus whatever process grows the black hole also promotes star formation with far higher efficiency. We interpret this in terms of the generic tendency of AGN accretion discs to become self–gravitating outside some small radius Rsg ∼ 0.01− 0.1 pc from the black hole. We argue that mergers ...
متن کاملEvidence for Rapidly Spinning Black Holes in Quasars
It has long been believed that accretion onto supermassive black holes powers quasars, but there has been relatively few observational constraints on the spins of the black holes. We address this problem by estimating the average radiative efficiencies of a large sample of quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, by combining their luminosity function and their black hole mass functi...
